About Talk Film

This is the third complete incarnation of Talk Film.

The site has always been about finding things on the web that film fans were interested in and adding these things to the site. We've always tried to make it easy for site members to add links to the site and share these links with everyone. We think this new version does this better than any version before.

The first version used PHP-Nuke, an excellent fast-to-set-up CMS system.

The second version used a bespoke CMS based on PHP-Nuke, as we needed to do a lot of extra things that PHP-Nuke couldn't do for us out of the box.

This version is bespoke again.

We wanted to make it easier for site members to add stories to the site.

We wanted to make the level of interaction between site members and the site greater, so have included an easier comments system and story and comment rating.

We wanted site members to be able to add friends (other site members) and be able to see what those friends had been doing on the site.*

We wanted site members to be able to only see stories for topics they were interested in.*

We wanted to make it easier for site members to see what's been happening on the site since they were last here, so have included a What's New page on login that highlights... er... What's New :)*

We wanted to make it easier for site members to find things they have added to the site (their stories, their comments), so they can see what other site members are saying about them.*

We wanted to be hip and use some Web 2.0 widgets, but not to the point that visitor's expectations of how things work were redefined. So yes, the new site uses some Web 2.0 features, but no, it doesn't use them all. We've also made it so the site will run without any Web 2.0 stuff via the Make it Normal link* in the navigation.
