Filmmakers Lead Global Search for New Talent
RENOWNED Independent Filmmakers and producers LEAD GLOBAL SEARCH FOR NEW TALENT AT filmaka.com
Neil LaBute, John Madden, Colin Firth, Zak Penn and Deepak Nayar to Judge Competition for the Best Undiscovered Filmmakers in the World Feature Film Deal Awarded to Finalist
(LOS ANGELES) November 30, 2006 – To find the best undiscovered filmmakers around the world, Filmaka.com announces the launch of an online competition backed by established leaders in independent film distribution, production, directing and acting. Through first-tier online peer voting followed by jury consideration, twice-monthly prizes will be awarded to top filmmakers, with the year-end finalist receiving a feature film production deal with the company and its principals. Outstanding short films submitted will also be considered for revenue-sharing distribution and licensing deals.
The jury of high-profile independent filmmakers and film industry professionals judging the short-listed entries, include filmmakers Werner Herzog, (Grizzly Man), Wim Wenders (Paris Texas, Wings of Desire), Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver, American Gigolo, Affliction), Neil LaBute (Nurse Betty, Wicker Man), Zak Penn (X-Men: The Last Stand, Incident at Loch Ness), John Madden (Shakespeare in Love, Proof), Colin Firth (Girl with a Pearl Earring, Bridget Jones’s Diary), Bill Pullman (The End of Violence, Lost Highway), Laura Bickford (Traffic, Fur), Thomas Augsberger (Waiting), and Deepak Nayar (Bend It Like Beckham, Buena Vista Social Club), as well as international distributors including Herbert Kloiber of Tele Muenchen Group.
“I believe there are many talented individuals around the world who lack access to Hollywood so they do not have the opportunity to prove their ability and creativity,” said Deepak Nayar, co-founder of Filmaka.com. “Our goal is to find the future of independent filmmaking.”
Twice a month Filmaka.com will announce contest topics where contestants will then shoot their one- to three-minute film and upload it to the site. At the Entry Level, contestant films will undergo peer voting, followed by jury voting for the 15 semi-finalists. The winning filmmaker from each contest will win $3,000; the runner-up will win $2,000. Both will get a chance to compete against all other winners and runners-up at the end of year for the feature film deal.
“If you want to sum it up, our business model is a cross between YouTube and Project Greenlight only we charge a subscription fee, insist on copyrighted original content produced especially for us according to our contest theme, and that we aim to be truly international” said Filmaka co-founder, Thomas Augsberger.
Filmaka.com is backed by a diverse group of independent film innovators including Nayar of Kintop Pictures; Augsberger’s Eden Rock Media; Tim Levy, founder of Future Film Group Holdings; Kurt Woolner, executive vice president of Film Finances; and Robert Herman, executive producer of Stink Ltd., a U.K. commercial production house.
The first contest topic “Stuck in Traffic” has been announced on Filmaka.com. Contestants can upload from December 15, 2006 through December 23, 2006.
Filmaka.com is headquartered in Los Angeles, California.
